High School Equivalency

Get ahead by getting your High School Equivalency (HSE). It is never too late to finish your education. The Door offers a variety of free programs aimed towards helping you get your high school equivalency certificate and move on to a career, college or a vocational/training program.

To learn more about the right program for your background and goals, view our program catalog below. Generally, overall, all Career and Education services are available to young people ages 16–24. See specific program descriptions for program-specific age requirements.

Advance & Earn

Location: Manhattan Youth Center

HSE –  The HSE class of Advance and Earn is a 20-week cohort that provides mandatory academic instruction, work readiness classes, and internship opportunities to young people ages 18-24 looking to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. There are two cohorts each year in February and September. Young people enrolled in this program can earn up to $375 weekly based on their internship attendance. Classes are held Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 2:00pm. Students must take a placement test known as the TABE TEST, and achieve a minimum 536 Reading score to be placed into this class.

Pre-HSE – The Pre-HSE program is a 20-week cohort that provides mandatory academic instruction and work readiness classes to young people ages 18–24 looking to strengthen their academic skills to eventually be prepared to obtain their High School Equivalency Diploma. The goal of this class is to increase a students’ TABE TEST score to qualify for the HSE CLASS.  There are two cohorts each year in February and September. Young People enrolled in this program can earn up to $150 weekly based on their class hours attended for that week. Classes are held Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 3:00pm. A student qualifies for this class by taking the placement test known as the TABE TEST and achieving a READING SCORE of 501-535.

All students looking to enroll in this program must provide:

  • NYCID, New York State ID, or US Passport

  • Social Security Card

  • Birth Certificate

  • Proof of Address

Advance & Earn Plus

Location: Bronx Youth Center

HSE – The HSE program is a 20-week cohort that provides both academic instruction and internship opportunities to young people looking to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. There are two cohorts each year in February and September. Young People enrolled in this program can earn up to $375 weekly based on their internship attendance. Classes are held Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 1:00pm. This program is for young people who have been or currently are in foster care or have received services through a FAP program or a Juvenile Justice program.

Pre-HSE – The Pre-HSE program is a 20-week cohort that provides both academic instruction opportunities to young people looking to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. There are two cohorts each year in February and September. Young People enrolled in this program can earn up to $150 weekly based on their academic attendance. Classes are held Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 1:00pm. This program is for young people who have been or currently are in foster care or have received services through a FAP program or a Juvenile Justice program.

Solar One – Enrollment for this 5-week program takes place twice a year in February and September at Solar One in Long Island City. This is an opportunity for young people, 18–24 , who have their High School Equivalency or High School Diploma AND have been or currently are in foster care or have received services through a FAP program or a Juvenile Justice program to earn credentials, including an OSHA 30 and participate in a training that will introduce them to the field of green construction. This program is followed by 20 weeks of internship and job placement support into the field.

General HSE

Location: Bronx Youth Center

The following general High School Equivalency (HSE) programs are opportunities open to young people, 18–24:

Adult Basic Education (ABE) –  The program is comprised of afternoon classes. Students are accepted at any time through rolling admissions. While enrolled in the ABE program, students are able to take advantage of onsite GED testing, access to their own coach, daily Metrocards, job placement assistance, and more.

HSE –  The program is comprised of morning classes. Students are accepted at any time through rolling admissions. While enrolled in the HSE program, students are able to take advantage of onsite GED testing, access to their own coach, daily Metrocards, job placement assistance, and more.

Pre-HSE –  The program is comprised of morning classes. Students are accepted at any time through rolling admissions. While enrolled in the Pre-HSE program, students are able to take advantage of onsite GED testing, access to their own coach, daily Metrocards, job placement assistance, and more.
