LaTasha: A Recipe for Success at The Door
Since joining The Door in 2014, Latasha Stephens, Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for our Culinary Program, has been helping young people carve out new career paths in the food industry. After a decade of work in housing services, Latasha sought a new challenge, one that would allow her to combine her passion for youth development with hands-on career training. “I wanted to stay at The Door because I love the mission, but I also wanted to work in a capacity where I could help young people discover their next step. The Culinary Program offered that opportunity.”
For Latasha, no two days look the same, especially during recruiting season. She spends her time interviewing and screening applicants, connecting with young people in The Door’s shared spaces, and ensuring that each participant is placed in a program that aligns with their goals. With strong demand, the program receives up to ten new applicants daily, many of whom hear about it from their peers or through word of mouth. Each year, more than 100 young people enroll in the program, often joining because they want to build stability, pursue a passion for food, or take advantage of the program’s career pathways.
The Culinary Program is much more than learning to cook. While students gain knife skills, recipes, and food safety certifications, they also participate in workshops on job readiness, social-emotional skills, and career exploration. Program highlights include field trips to restaurants, structured placements with partner employers, and paid internships designed to lead to permanent employment. With a dedicated staff team supporting them, participants can grow personally and professionally while preparing for real opportunities in New York City’s food industry.
One of Latasha’s proudest moments was organizing a graduation ceremony for Briana, who hadn’t experienced a traditional milestone like that before. “It was a tearful, joyful day. She earned her certificate, brought her child, and celebrated with her family. Seeing her pride reminded me how important it is to celebrate every win.” Another success story Latasha highlights is Chase, who enrolled at just 17, completed the program with dedication, and now runs the kitchen at The Door’s Bronx Youth Center. “He’s not just working; he’s giving back to the same community that supported him,” she said.
For Latasha, the most rewarding part is witnessing the transformation. “I see our interns start with self-doubt, and by graduation, they’re more confident, prepared, and ready for the workforce. That growth keeps me motivated.” She also stresses the importance of meeting young people where they are. “I remind myself daily: their path is theirs. What I see as success may look different to them, and that deserves to be celebrated.”
And her personal motto? “Spread the glitter.” Latasha explains, “Glitter is shiny, sparkly, and a little contagious, just like encouragement and support. Even when it’s messy, spreading it makes everything brighter.”
With Latasha’s leadership and heart, the Culinary Program continues to open doors for young people, helping them move beyond survival mode and into futures filled with possibility.
