A Place to Thrive: Javier’s Story of Growth and Self-Expression
At The Door, Javier found a space to create and be around people who supported him. “A lot of trust, friends, a place to be, if you’re having a bad day, need to calm down, or just want to eat. Whatever your problem is, The Door has a solution for it,” he shared. When he first came to The Door in August 2024, Javier didn’t know what to expect. It was a big space, and he arrived close to closing time. At the time, Javier had recently left high school and was focused on finding a job. What started as a search for employment slowly became something more.
Javier initially came to The Door because of his interest in fashion design, something he had loved since childhood. His introduction to us came from a chance meeting between his mom and our Assistant Director of Arts Programming, Alejandro Rodriguez. As a kid, he sketched outfits inspired by cartoons, which later grew into sewing and designing clothes. The Door expanded that passion. He joined a photography club and The Door’s Youth Council, explored painting, including showcasing a piece titled Tutor Dynasty, experimented with makeup, continued sketching, and refined his sewing and design skills. “A lot of things opened up instead of just fashion design,” he said. “There were endless things to do. I didn’t know where to pursue my passion until I came to The Door.”
A big part of that growth came from staff support. Lyric, a teaching artist at The Door, consistently encouraged Javier to trust himself. “It’s okay to express yourself. It’s okay to be yourself,” Lyric would tell him. That reassurance helped Javier build confidence, not just as an artist, but as a person learning to find self-confidence, community, and direction. For Javier, the sense of community at The Door made all the difference. He describes it as vibrant and welcoming, a place where he never feels ignored and always has someone to talk to. “If you’re having a bad day, or just need to calm down, there’s always someone here,” he shared.
That support helped Javier reach important goals. Javier now works at Old Navy through The Door’s This Way ONward program and loves teaching makeup tutorials. Also, with guidance from The Door’s Future Pathways program, he enrolled in college and began working toward his academic goals. He even accomplished unexpected achievements, such as designing The Door’s 2025 Pride March shirt and being featured in Thriving Together: Innovative Paths to Youth Mental Health, a video project that highlights the importance of youth mental health and The Door’s mental health program.
Each step felt possible because Javier wasn’t navigating it alone. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue building a future that blends creativity and growth. But no matter where he goes next, The Door remains a place that helped him find confidence, community, and direction. The Door is a place he can count on. It’s where he found support when he needed it. Whether he was figuring out work, school, or just how to trust himself, The Door met him where he was and helped him thrive at his own pace. It’s a place that feels welcoming, stays open, and reminds young people that they don’t have to figure everything out all at once and alone.
