Woodlawn Preservation Training: An Incredible Opportunity for Young Adults

Once again the Woodlawn Cemetery is launching its wonderful Woodlawn Bridges to Crafts Careers Preservation Training Program (PTP), which provides young adults with a chance of getting good jobs and careers as well as an opportunity to help build the Bronx. The program selects 20 interns who obtain hands-on training in masonry and restoration with the guidance of a resident craftsman. The deadline for applying is Friday, January 31.
This is the program’s sixth cohort, with 83 young adults having already participated in the past four years.
“This unique program is immersive training that also provides specialized life skills as well as OSHA certifications, which are vital,” said Woodlawn President and CEO Mitch Rose. “These graduates are making a positive economic impact by acquiring sustainable careers.”
PTP is a paid nine-week career training and job placement workforce development program that focuses mainly on the process of restoration and preservation of stone typically found in historic cemeteries. Once the program is completed, interns will receive an OSHA-10 Safety certification, Jahn Mortar certification, and support in applying to entry-level positions in the industry.
In 2015, the Woodlawn Conservancy partnered with the International Masonry Institute of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsworkers Local 1 union to establish the PTP, which was sponsored by the World Monuments Fund, called the Bridge to Crafts Careers. Since then, 83 young adults have participated within the program.
The program provides immersive training that give specialized life skills. The social services component is contributed by The Door, a youth development agency with wrap-around services. The agency is also involved in the recruitment and training process, along with helping the interns develop interviewing techniques, resume writing and communication skills. Interns use their skills on Woodlawn’s monuments mausoleums as a training lab under the supervision of a retired Masonry Resident Craftsman.
To be eligible for PTP Training you must be between the ages of 18-24, a resident of the five boroughs of New York City, have a High School Diploma or GED/Equivalency, and authorized to work in the United States.
