Fighting Back: The Door Takes Legal Action to Protect Immigrant Youth
Last week, The Door joined a coalition of legal advocacy organizations in filing a federal lawsuit challenging a deeply unjust practice: the arrest of individuals, many of them young immigrants and Door members, at their mandatory immigration court hearings.
Alongside African Communities Together (ACT), we are proud to stand as an organizational plaintiff in this case, which seeks to end a policy that is both cruel and unlawful. These arrests violate not only the rights of immigrants but also the integrity of the legal process. No one should be punished for seeking protection through the very system designed to offer it.
For the young people we serve, many of whom have fled violence, abuse, and unimaginable trauma, this policy creates an impossible choice: risk detention or deportation or miss a critical court date that could determine their future. At The Door, we witness the fear this instills every single day. Our members deserve safety, dignity, and a fair chance to pursue their legal cases without intimidation or threat.
This lawsuit is one of the many ways we are fighting back. Whether inside the courtroom or in our communities, The Door remains committed to defending the rights of immigrant youth and standing firmly against policies that dehumanize and endanger them.
We invite you to read the full press release and consider making a donation to support our legal advocacy and holistic services for immigrant youth. Together, we can protect the rights and the futures of young people across New York City and beyond.
Donate and stand with young people.
