Building the Mental Health Workforce Young People Need
Young people deserve access to mental health care when they need it, not after weeks or months on a waitlist.
Yet across the country, the growing need for youth mental health support is colliding with a severe shortage of qualified professionals. Kelsey Louie, CEO of The Door and Broome Street Academy Charter High School, explores this urgent challenge in a new op-ed, “The Kids Are in Crisis: How to Build the Mental Health Workforce They Need.”
The op-ed describes what our CEO calls the “dual mental health crisis”: rising rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and other mental health needs among young people, combined with a workforce that does not have enough clinicians to meet the demand.
Addressing this crisis requires more than expanding services. We must also build a stronger, more diverse, and more accessible pipeline into the mental health field.
Creating a New Pathway into Social Work
Through an innovative partnership with the NYU Silver School of Social Work, The Door is helping experienced social service professionals pursue their Master of Social Work degrees while continuing to serve young people.
The program is designed to remove some of the most common barriers to earning an MSW, including cost, time, travel, and the challenge of balancing school with full-time employment.
Participating staff remain fully employed at The Door while completing online coursework and internships during standard business hours. Philanthropic support also significantly reduces tuition costs, making graduate education more accessible to staff who are already deeply committed to their communities.
Cohort members move through the program together, offering one another peer support and applying what they learn directly to their work with Door members.
Growing a Diverse and Community-Rooted Workforce
Thirteen Door staff members are completing their MSW studies this summer. A second cohort of 14 staff members has applied to begin classes in the fall and could graduate by 2028.
These future clinicians already understand the strengths, experiences, and needs of the young people they serve. By helping them advance their education, The Door is supporting the development of a culturally responsive mental health workforce rooted in trust, community, and real-world experience.
The impact extends beyond professional development. Every new clinician brings us closer to a future where young people can receive timely, high-quality care from someone who understands their lives and communities.
A Model for Broader Change
The youth mental health crisis cannot be solved by one organization or sector alone.
In the op-ed, Kelsey calls on colleges, universities, community-based organizations, philanthropy, and government to work together to create and fund more accessible pathways into the mental health field.
The Door and NYU Silver partnership demonstrates what is possible when institutions rethink traditional barriers and build programs around the realities of working professionals. With investment and collaboration, this model could help strengthen the mental health workforce in communities across the country.
Every young person should be able to access effective care when, where, and how they need it. Building that future will require urgency, innovation, and a shared commitment to ensuring that no young person is left waiting in crisis.
