The Door recognizes the importance of recreational activity to the healthy development of young people, and offers a range of recreational, fitness, and performance opportunities for young people.
The Door’s physical arts programs include weight training, cardiovascular conditioning (machines, running, boxing, and conditioning classes), basketball, and other traditional physical educational games.
Performing Arts opportunities include weekly "Open Mic" sessions, where young people present spoken word, visual art, singing, dancing, and other artistic pieces for feedback from their peers, and Bustin' Out, a theater troupe dedicated to using the life experiences of members to develop performances that address social issues. Bustin’ Out Theater provides an opportunity for young people to learn how to utilize their life experiences and develop their unique voices and stories through the performing arts. The ensemble focuses on developing scenes and monologues, poetry/rhyming, creative movement, and improvisation. Through theater workshops, participants develop original pieces that are performed at regular showcase events at The Door.
