This Way Ahead

Build career and leadership skills to last a lifetime

Sponsored by The Gap Foundation, This Way Ahead is a nine-month long job training and leadership development program for young people who are in school, between ages 16-21 and interested in building job and life skills.  You will participate in workshops led by Door coaches and Gap and Old Navy employees who teach you about possible careers and help you gain the skills you need for a future job. 

Those young people who successfully complete the training will have the opportunity to interview for paid internships at Gap and Old Navy stores.  Young people who participate in this program also have access to numerous supportive services, modest stipends and additional internship opportunities. 

How it works

This Way Ahead is a four phase program. 

Phase 1– Getting started (November to January 2010)

  • Attend an information session at The Door
  • Complete application
  • Set up an interview and assessment (Bring in all necessary documents at time of interview, including completed application.)
  • Upon acceptance in the program, attend a program orientation session
  • Attend program kickoff event

Phase 2– Down to business (February to June 2011)

  • Attend a two-hour Gap Supplement Workshop with Gap Inc. management
  • Attend a two-hour Career and Life Skills workshop with Door staff
  • Attend monthly Grown and Professional development House meetings

Phase 3– Getting ready to work (July to October 2011)

  • Attend a one-month This Way Ahead Retail Boot Camp
  • Attend a two-week bridge period of on-the-job training at select participating Gap and/or Old Navy Stores

Phase 4– When its all said…and not yet done!

  • One year of follow-up services with program staff

Eligibility

  • 16-21 years old
  • Currently enrolled in school (high school, GED program or college) with proof of enrollment
  • Proof of identity (drivers license, learners permit, passport, resident alien card/ naturalization paper)
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States (social security card, letter from social security office)

Cost

  • FREE!

ENROLLMENT FOR THIS PROGRAM IS NOW CLOSED. IT WILL OPEN UP AGAIN IN NOVEMBER 2012.
