iPower

Explore your dreams, enhance your community

iPower was formed by ESOL students in 2006 as a way to serve immigrant communities while helping young people develop academic and job readiness skills.  The name stands for Immigrant People Organizing and Working for Empowerment and Rights, and its mission is to provide services, educate and empower immigrants living in New York City.

Created by youth, for youth

iPower is a key part of The Door’s ESOL classes.  All ESOL students are involved in iPower workshops.  With support and assistance from peers and staff, these students have since started numerous initiatives showcasing their interests and needs, including:

  • iDo Theater – develop tools to tell immigrant stories and express your creativity
  • iDo Fashion – explore your identity through recycling and redesigning old clothes
  • iTech – learn how to reuse and refurbish computer equipment
  • iTour – be an ambassador for The Door by showing new members around the facility and introducing them to the many staff and departments that can help

New initiatives are forming all the time.  Join iPower and explore your interests while making a difference!
