English Language (ESOL)

Improving language, celebrating culture, developing leaders

The Door welcomes young people who would like to improve their English language skills. We offer a flexible set of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, Monday through Friday, to work around your schedule. Through our ESOL classes, you will have access to real-life opportunities and workshops that are linked to your specific needs and interests.

More than just classroom instruction

Our main goal is to help you be able to participate fully in all areas of your life, including:

  • Personal – improving interactions with your family and friends
  • Work – communicating better with your employer and coworkers
  • Social – helping you to meet new people and form lasting relationships
  • Economic – learning how to manage your finances and build savings
  • Political – helping you to advocate for yourself and others while becoming an active participant in your community and beyond

Our ESOL classes, taught by New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year nominee Hsiao Wei Yang,  will help you strengthen each of these areas through teamwork and self-directed exploration.

A leadership role

We understand and celebrate the diversity of our ESOL students, and we encourage you to be an active participant in classes. Many of the daily lessons are led by students, and you will have the chance to share the special skills and talents that you bring to the classroom. In addition, you can explore other interests like fashion, theater, cooking, technology and more by participating in one of the many workshops offered through iPower (Immigrant People Organizing and Working for Empowerment and Rights).
