Deadline Looms for N.Y. to Get School Grants; Charter Schools Remain Point of Debate
Reported by GIOVANNA DRPIC
MYFOXNY.COM - Time is running out for New York to apply for $700 million in federal grants to bolster education. Proponents of charter schools are hoping that lawmakers in Albany can raise the cap on charter schools in time for the June 1 deadline.
The state Senate passed a bill to increase the cap from 200 to 460 charter schools, but there is still no state Assembly version of the bill.
Sticking points include location of charter schools, sharing of space with public schools, and parent and administrator involvement in the approval process.
The teachers' union, which in the past has been resistant to raising charter caps, said that the union will not back raising the cap until legislation that addresses these sticking points.
