Door Teacher Recognized by New York Times as ESOL Teacher of the Year Honoree
The Door’s ESOL Instructional Coordinator, Hsiao-Wei Yang, has been selected as one of three New York Times honorees for ESOL Teacher of the Year. Hsiao-Wei received this prestigious designation after being nominated by her students.
Hsiao-wei has been at The Door for over six years. She is known for her innovative and unique teaching style, and the way she integrates instruction with the real-life experiences of her students, most of them recent immigrants living and working in New York City. Her experiential learning classes offer students educational options that are linked to their real needs and interests. In her role as Instructional Coordinator, Hsiao-wei acts as a catalyst of exploration. Instead of providing her students with answers, she facilitates their discovery of answers, creating a classroom experience that is highly engaging and empowering.
