The Door Announces New Executive Director

Julie L. Shapiro has been named the new Executive Director at The Door, one of New York City’s leading youth development agencies, offering comprehensive and confidential health, legal, counseling, recreation and education services under one roof and free of charge to nearly 12,000 adolescents each year.

Ms. Shapiro comes to The Door with 16 years experience designing and implementing large scale, high impact, multi-partner human service and workforce development initiatives.  Most recently she served as Senior Vice President at Seedco, a national nonprofit organization that works with local partners to create economic opportunities for disadvantaged jobseekers, workers and entrepreneurs.  As such, she oversaw the development, management and growth of nationally recognized workforce development programs, including one of the country’s busiest One Stop Career Centers in Upper Manhattan.

Prior to joining Seedco, Ms. Shapiro was Assistant Vice President for Welfare to Work Services at Federation Employment and Guidance Services (F.E.G.S). She has also been a Project Manager in the New York City Human Resources Administration’s Office of Policy and Program Analysis, where she helped launch the City’s first major welfare to work initiative.

“It is with great excitement that we announce Ms. Shapiro’s addition to our team,” says Michael Zisser, Chief Executive Officer of The Door. “At a time when young people come to us in record numbers seeking critical services, I am confident that Ms. Shapiro’s leadership will take us to new heights as we continue to provide the highest quality programs for New York City youth.”

Ms. Shapiro received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Brown University, and her Master in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.  She is a board member of the New York City Employment and Training Coalition.
