Position Title:
ESOL Instructor (Temporary)

Overview:
The Door’s mission is to empower young people ages 12-21 to reach their potential by providing, comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and supportive environment. The ESOL Instructor will participate as a member of our instructional team. In this capacity, he/she will be responsible for all aspects of teaching our self-contained ESOL class, and facilitating learning groups for The Door’s “English for a Specific Purpose” (ESP) program. The ideal candidate will have experience in curriculum design and implementation, ESOL teaching practices, youth development and making connections between education and future life planning.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate all instructional aspects of the ESOL class
- Provide differentiated instruction to a wide-range of learners
- Serve as member of curriculum development team to help build a lesson plan bank that prepares students for success
- Plan lessons and projects that are outcome based to develop skills necessary for both English language proficiency and personal development
- Plan and submit daily and weekly lesson plans which specify lesson goals, objectives, procedures, and methods of assessment
- Maintain accurate student records and all student contacts
- Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth development
- Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to increase services to specific youth populations and provide the appropriate plans for young people
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to support opportunities that meet the needs of all ESOL members, including career development, higher education, and social development
- Coordinate and facilitate small group instruction for ESOL, ESP and other program students
- Administer multiple forms of assessment, including summative and formative assessments, and use these assessments to inform lesson planning and day-to-day instructional strategies
- Maintain a classroom environment that is stimulating, supports individual and group learning and is rigorous and nurturing
- Develop and maintain student portfolios, documenting milestone and other supporting interim achievements
- Maintain case records pursuant to data-management procedures established for the program and as is stipulated by funding sources or contractual requirements
- Collect and maintain documentation of services and outcomes for internal and external use
- Provide extra coverage for instructors, when needed
- Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events
- Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor and/or director
Qualifications:
- B.A. in ESOL, bilingual education, or a related field, M.A. preferred
- Minimum of three years teaching non native English speakers
- Must be bilingual; Spanish or Asian languages preferred
- Minimum of three years experience in a social service setting with an adolescent population
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of a multi-cultural, inner-city adolescent population and ability to relate to adolescents
Salary:
High 30’s to Low 40’s
Hours:
35 hours per week (Temporary from June 30, 2008-September 9, 2009)
