overview:
The Door - A Center of Alternatives has a contract with the NYC Department of Education to provide Supplemental Education Services for high school students at several high schools and at The Door. We are seeking tutors who will provide small group and one-on-one tutoring instruction in the following areas: math, reading, and English language arts. Instruction may be provided at The Door, East Side Community High School, or another high school.
Responsibilities:
- Provide instruction in one-on-one or in small cluster groups to students in the above mentioned areas
- Work with other SES staff to ensure each participant has an individual academic plan
- Work with young people on homework, remediation, and RCT/Regents prep
- Document and monitor attendance and progress of young people
- Attend all relevant staff meetings at The Door and/or relevant high school
- Supervise other tutors in the classroom
- Any other functions and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
- Ideal candidates for this position will be graduate students in an Education program
- BA or BS
- Sufficiently proficient in at least one of the three program areas for middle and high school students (math, reading, English language arts) to provide academic assistance
- Previous experience working with young people in an urban setting
- Computer literacy
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Knowledge and sensitivity to the issues and challenges of urban youth
- Energy, creativity, initiative, flexibility and a sense of humor
Hours:
3 hours per week at a minimum, 9 hours per week at a maximum. Availability from October through April required, through June preferred.
salary:
$20/hour
