Position Description:

University Settlement, serving over 20,000 low-income individuals and families each year with innovative programming, and its affiliate agency, The Door, New York City’s premier youth development agency, providing comprehensive services to 10,000 young people each year, seek a Director of Development to manage its rapidly growing Development Department. As a member of the senior management team, candidate would mange and oversee a combined development department which would include: annual and special giving campaigns; special events production; foundation, government and corporate giving; and marketing and public relations. This position provides strategic and operational leadership, vision, direction and oversight for the agency’s comprehensive development and fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Development, implementation and oversight of giving campaigns, special events, foundation and corporate relations, and endowment campaign
  • Strategizing, planning, directing and overseeing all private fund raising initiatives, including annual unrestricted and program operating support, as well as potential capital and endowment campaigns
  • Planning and executing significant growth strategy for annual fundraising
  • Development and implementation of a public relations and marketing strategy as well as oversight of public relations consultants
  • Develop statistical and financial materials and assess the costs and benefits of various fundraising activities
  • Work closely with Executive Directors, Chief Financial Officer and the Senior Management team
  • Liaison to the Board of Directors and foster involvement by board members in fundraising and related activities
  • Oversight of the implementation of the Raiser’s Edge system into the organization
  • Oversee staff support and communication to the Board of Directors
  • Overall responsibility for the Development office of approximately 10 full time and part time staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • At least ten years experience in the development field
  • Demonstrated track record of successful philanthropic fundraising including planning for, growing and managing a successful development program
  • Knowledge and experience working with Raiser’s Edge
  • Success in soliciting and securing support from private foundations, individuals and other institutions
  • Excellent communications skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to donors, board members and other audiences
  • Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build, manage and motivate an effective team
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, organize workload and manage competing demands
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, donor management software, and the Internet
